At Nurture Health, Families are as Important as the Patient

31 January 2025

We put the patient first when it comes to acute care and medical treatment at our physical rehabilitation hospitals.

However, if you are a family member or caregiver of a patient, Nurture Health would like to remind you that your own health and well-being also need attention.

There is an adage that says “you cannot pour from an empty cup”. With that in mind, here are a few pointers that can help to keep that cup topped up to a healthy level.

Know what to expect

Firstly, it is important to have a clear idea of what may lie ahead for you both. This can help you prepare, mentally and emotionally, for your loved one returning home after their stay in hospital.

Do not be shy to ask questions: our experienced professional staff are here to listen to your concerns, and provide guidance on the way forward.

Different conditions may call for neurological rehabilitation, stroke recovery support, injury rehab or other out-patient services such as physiotherapy or occupational therapy, so make sure you know what the care routine will involve after discharge.

Nurture your own energy

Just as you are trying to support your loved one in the best way that you can, make sure that you yourself have a support system.

It may sound obvious that you should take care of your own mental and physical health, but it is all too easy to let this slide when you are the caregiver.

You need to ensure that you eat a healthy, balanced diet, get enough sleep, and take regular exercise.

Even a short 15-minute walk in the sunshine can make a positive difference to your physical health. Do not neglect your own interests and hobbies: it is all about balance.

Ask for support

This is not a journey that you have to walk alone: the caring team at Nurture Health know what lies ahead and are here to support you.

Outside our rehabilitation hospitals, look around your home circle and connect with family and friends. Let them know what your needs are, share your feelings and ask for their support.

If you need further support, out-patient services can help immensely.

There is also a range of rehabilitation equipment and other disability rehabilitation aids that can help ease the journey.

Watch out for burnout

Adapting to the demands of caregiving can be tough, tiring and at times overwhelming, so be aware of the potential for burn out.

If you truly need a break, consider respite care where your loved one will be looked after for a brief period while you recharge your emotional batteries.

Ask the caring team at Nurture Health to give you more information about services near where you live, including short-term home nursing. In certain situations, hospice care may also be an option.

Celebrate small wins

When it comes to rehabilitation, patience is key as it can often be a long process. Have realistic expectations and together with your loved one recognise – and celebrate – each small step on the path towards recovery.

You play an important part in their recovery and by caring for yourself you will be better equipped to support them.

Nurture Health’s rehabilitation hospitals and healthcare professionals are here to guide both patients and their families through this journey.

Remember, taking care of yourself is not a luxury – it is a necessity.
